Our Story Under the Stars

Discover our story, mission, and passion for sharing the wonders of the night sky

Dark Sky Parks

Being an International Dark Sky Park means we get to continue that tradition — offering meaningful, science-based stargazing experiences while also protecting the night environment for future generations. Better lighting, better energy use, and better skies don’t just help wildlife and the park; they support local communities, too. Astronomy tourism has become an important part of the Bryce Canyon experience, giving guests another unforgettable way to connect with this incredible place.

Richard- My passion for astronomy and the night sky is a family legacy. My father worked as an electrical engineer for Caltech’s Solar Astronomy department (Pasadena, CA) , and my childhood summers were spent at the university’s lodge at Big Bear Lake. Surrounded by visiting professors from around the world and a fleet of large Dobsonian telescopes, I learned early on that the stars are a universal language.

Decades later, as an owner-partner at American Ring Travel Inc., I recognized a major gap in the industry. Thousands of international bus travelers were overnighting in Bryce Canyon—home to the world’s finest dark skies—but they were “stranded” at their hotels. Under Dept of Transportation (DOT) rules, bus driver hours expire before the stars come out,  leaving the tour groups with no way to reach stargazing venues once the sun went down.

Bryce Canyon Stargazing was a solution to this problem. By providing dedicated shuttle transfers from the Bryce View Lodge, we solved the logistics of the “parked bus.” Today, we ensure that global travelers don’t just stay near the canyon—they actually experience its celestial wonder. We provide the transport, the technology, and the expertise to bring the universe within reach, one shuttle at a time.
